Making the Grade: Solving the U.S. Math Problem

September 26, 2023 The Hill

In an opening talk at The Hill’s event “Making the Grade: Solving the U.S. Math Problem,” New Classrooms CEO & Co-Founder Joel Rose, a former 5th-grade teacher, highlighted the challenges faced by math educators in addressing the diverse skill levels of their students. Though these difficulties, and math achievement levels, have been topics of discussion for decades, the problem has been exacerbated by the pandemic. While the talking points for improving math achievement, such as teacher training or raising standards, are sensible and coherent, these approaches haven’t yielded significant gains as measured by NAEP scores.

So, how do we solve the U.S. math problem?

According to Rose, the answer lies in skill pacing and is itself a pretty basic math problem to solve.
